An Indian summer comes early at the Grange Park in Surrey , with a world premiere that places the Taj Mahal front and centre, combining a western orchestra with sitar strings and tabla beats, composed by virtuoso sitar player Nishat Khan.

His trademark instrument and vocal narration will take us through a tale of jewels, enthronements and even an elephant fight.

One of the most iconic buildings on earth, The Taj Mahal was originally constructed as a magnificent tomb for Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz. Now on stage, 17th century India will come to life, from the battle for the throne to the construction of the Taj Mahal.

The Calcutta-born star, who is himself descended from the court musicians of the Moghul period, has been at the forefront of Indian music for decades. His blend of traditional and modern has seen him touring around the world, at BBC Proms or alongside Eric Clapton, from Delhi to Tehran, to audiences of popes, presidents, and the public, and appearing on soundtracks for Merchant Ivory and Bernado Bertolucci productions.
