Milton Keynes Umbrella Project

Writer: jessica Memonjessica Memon

The Milton Keynes Umbrella Project is the UK’s most extensive display to date with over 400 umbrellas. It aims to serve as an inspiring visual representation of Neurodiversity—much like the varied umbrellas, it signifies the diverse and unique ways we each behave, think, react, and feel. Neurodiversity is a term that collectively includes each and every one of us!

These impactful installations are created to ignite discussions and allow cities like ours to demonstrate that we support diversity and aim to be more inclusive.

Through this vibrant and dynamic platform, we aim to enhance acceptance and understanding of neurodivergence—an umbrella term for individuals whose cognitive functioning or mindset may lead them to think, learn, or behave differently from prevailing societal norms.

Neurodivergence encompasses various terms, including Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette Syndrome, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, and Dyscalculia.

The MK Umbrella Project acknowledges that everyone is valid and valuable, regardless of their different ways of interacting with the world.

The display serves as a catalyst for Milton Keynes, signifying the beginning of a commitment to lasting change, where inclusion becomes embedded in the fabric of our city.
